Beware of copper thieves in your Lansing (MI) neighborhood

Copper thieves are on the loose here in Lansing and around the country.

So protect the copper in your home and in your business.  A news release from the Lansing Police Department says that vacant, abandoned and homes waiting to be refurbished are targeted by thieves.  In Lansing, according to Lt. Noel Garcia, the reoccuring method of entry into homes has been a rear door being breached.

Copper thefts of homes have included taking out copper plumbing to ripping out and the taking of hot water heaters.  Businesses have also been victim of copper thefts.  They have had had exterior air conditioning units taken, including those in windows and on the top of the building.

I have an old hot water heater in my garage.  I’ve been procrastinating at buying a bulk junk permit from the city.  If I put it by the curb, I wonder if somebody would take it.

If you know of local copper thefts, you are invited to leave a comment.
