UPDATE: Our neighbors pass bucket for family who lost house to fire

I am really proud of my neighbors here on the southwest side of the city of Lansing where families live in homes built during the fifties and sixties. P5310004It’s a place where kids play in each other’ yards and where residents help each other.

That pattern continued today, one day after one of our neighbors lost her house to a fire that was started in the middle of the night by an overheated laptop on the couch. She, her two children and her brother had to run from their house with only the clothes on their backs. Their family dog was lost and their cars were burned.

That’s when the neighbors kicked into action. A next door neighbor serves as a coordinator for offers of help. Another neighbor, Tracy, who lives across the street from us went door to door in the neighborhood with a bucket where neighbors were asked to throw in contributions. Five hundred dollars was collected to help the family pay expenses during the next few days.

My wife went to our church rummage sale where she picked up clothes that the kids can wear while they reorganize their lives.

At the end of the day, I’m left with a fresh appreciation of our small neighborhood and the desire of people of a mixture of racial and ethnic groups to help a neighbor in need. People do care.

  1. I would like to thank my neighborhood for their generosity when a family was in need. When gas prices are over four $ a gallon. I know that my neighborhood is strugling along with me but you reached into your pockets and still gave. THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!

  2. I am very proud of my wife Tracy that is just the wife and mother and grandmother she is.

  3. I am very proud of my grandma for going around and using her time to help out our neighbors. That is just the kind of mother or grandmother that I LOVE in the family. I would just like to thank her for that and helping out a neighbor out.

    THANK YOU TRACY!!!

  4. When my family moved into this neighborhood in Nov. 2003 we knew that we were moving into a nice area. That feeling was reaffirmed this past weekend when my immediate neighbor and best friend, Kristie Dunn, lost everything in a fire. The emotional and financial support from all of the neighbors has been outstanding. I’d like to thank everyone on behalf of the Dunn family. An account has been established at Fifth/Third Bank called the “Dunn Family Fire Fund” using the funds collected by Tracy Valdez along with other donations from friends, family and co-workers. Anyone wishing to make a contribution can go into any Fifth/Third Bank and mention the account.

    Again, thank you neighbors!!!!
